DBT Skills Group is open to adults 18 and older who are currently seeing an individual therapist and would like additional support. This group may be right for you if you experience any of the following:
Dialectical Behavior Therapy (DBT) is an evidence-based treatment that combines cognitive behavioral approaches with Eastern philosophies, like mindfulness and acceptance. It was originally developed by Dr. Marsha Linehan to treat borderline personality disorder (BPD), but has since been shown to effectively treat a wide range of mental health conditions.
If DBT is the “what,” then DBT Skills are the “how.” DBT Skills Group helps you put DBT concepts into practice by teaching skills from four modules: mindfulness, distress tolerance, interpersonal effectiveness, and emotion regulation. These skills help you with the following:
Group is led by a trained DBT therapist who guides the sessions, provides education, and helps members apply the skills to their individual situations.
Participants meet in a group setting which provides opportunities to offer each other support, encouragement, and feedback. This communal aspect can enhance motivation and accountability. Our DBT Skills groups cap at six members.
Each group session follows a set agenda in which new information is taught and homework is assigned. Groups meet for 90 minutes weekly.
Group members learn specific skills through lessons, exercises, and activities. Homework allows these skills to be practiced in real-life situations, which reinforces learning and builds confidence.
We require an initial 6-month commitment in order to complete a full DBT skills cycle. However, research has shown it is most advantageous for participants to complete two cycles for sufficient understanding and application of skills.
All potential group members must participate in a short screening process to determine if DBT Skills Group is a good fit with their current treatment.
