An EMDR therapy intensive typically refers to an extended and concentrated period of EMDR therapy sessions conducted over a short span of time, usually several consecutive days or weeks. The goal of this trauma treatment approach is to accelerate the therapeutic process and provide essential psychological support for individuals dealing with significant trauma, PTSD (Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder), or other psychological issues.
During an EMDR therapy intensive, a client might undergo multiple sessions per day with a trained therapist. This concentrated approach can provide essential psychological support in processing traumatic memories more rapidly compared to traditional weekly sessions. It allows clients to delve deeply into their experiences, emotions, and cognitive restructuring in a compressed timeframe, potentially leading to faster progress and effective trauma treatment.
Perhaps you find yourself frustrated that you aren't making progress in your trauma treatment quickly enough with individual therapy. Maybe you're just trying to survive between therapy sessions and realize you need more psychological support. You might be constantly triggered and on edge, living in a state of fight or flight. Or perhaps your therapist recommended EMDR therapy as part of your treatment plan. If this resonates with you, an EMDR intensive might be just what you need to help you along your wellness journey.
The first session is an 80-minute clinical interview, where your psychologist will gain insights into your symptoms, family history, relationship history, and medical history. A discussion about your trauma and current triggers will help your clinician assess if you're a suitable candidate for EMDR therapy and identify any potential obstacles to your trauma treatment. The second session lasts 4 hours, which includes two ten-minute breaks and an hour for lunch. During this session, your psychologist will teach you techniques for regulating your nervous system, essential for the EMDR therapy process. In the second half, you will collaborate with your therapist to formulate a treatment plan and initiate trauma reprocessing. The third session consists of 4 hours dedicated to trauma reprocessing using bilateral stimulation. The final session is an 80-minute post-EMDR session to evaluate your growth, level of distress, and discuss future psychological support options.
*Additional 3-4 hour reprocessing sessions can be scheduled if mutually agreed upon by you and your provider for an added fee.
Scheduling is based on the availability of you and your psychologist, with the aim of arranging the intensive within a two-week period. Research has shown that these intensives are highly effective in addressing symptoms of trauma. Reach out for a consultation to learn more about EMDR therapy and how it can assist you.
