Comprehensive Adult Psychological Assessment

ages 18+

An adult comprehensive psychological evaluation is a thorough assessment designed to help individuals better understand their cognitive, emotional, and relational functioning. For adults ages 18 and older, this type of evaluation can be especially helpful when there are longstanding concerns, overlapping symptoms, or questions that have been difficult to untangle through therapy alone.

This evaluation may be appropriate for individuals seeking clarity around ADHD, autism, learning differences, trauma-related symptoms (including PTSD), personality patterns, emotional regulation, or persistent relational difficulties. It is also commonly pursued by adults who have felt misunderstood, misdiagnosed, or unsure why certain challenges continue despite effort and insight.

The assessment typically includes a combination of clinical interviews, standardized psychological and cognitive measures, self-report and informant questionnaires, and careful review of developmental, educational, and relational history. When indicated, screening for autism, ADHD, learning disabilities, trauma-related symptoms, and personality functioning is included to provide a comprehensive and integrated understanding.

The goal of an adult comprehensive evaluation is not simply to assign diagnoses, but to offer meaningful insight into how an individual’s mind works — including strengths, vulnerabilities, and patterns that influence daily life and relationships. Results are used to generate thoughtful, individualized recommendations that can guide therapy, accommodations, self-understanding, and next steps toward more sustainable well-being.

When Might an Adult Assessment Be Helpful?

You might consider a comprehensive evaluation if you:

  • Have struggled with focus, organization, or follow-through for much of your life

  • Feel emotionally reactive, shut down, or overwhelmed in relationships

  • Have a history of anxiety, depression, or trauma that hasn’t fully explained your experiences

  • Suspect ADHD or autism later in life and want clarity

  • Have received conflicting or unclear diagnoses in the past

  • Feel you’ve “worked hard in therapy” but still feel stuck

  • Want language and understanding for patterns you’ve lived with for years

Many adults seek assessment not because something is new, but because they are ready to finally understand why things have felt hard for so long.

What You Can Expect from the Process

Adult assessments are conducted with care, pacing, and respect for the individual. Testing is not about performance or “doing well,” but about understanding how your mind works in real life.

The process typically includes:

  • A detailed intake to understand your history and current concerns

  • Structured testing sessions tailored to your referral questions

  • Opportunities for breaks and flexibility as needed

  • Thoughtful integration of results rather than isolated scores

  • A feedback session to review findings and answer questions

We are mindful that many adults come into assessment feeling anxious, self-critical, or unsure what the results might mean. Our goal is for the process to feel collaborative, grounded, and supportive.

what you'll receive after an assessment

Following the completion of your psychological evaluation, you will receive a comprehensive, thoughtfully written report and a feedback session designed to help you understand the findings in a clear and meaningful way.

A comprehensive written report
You will receive a detailed report that integrates interview information, test results, and clinical interpretation into a cohesive understanding of your cognitive, emotional, and relational functioning. The report explains findings in accessible language, highlights strengths as well as areas of difficulty, and clarifies diagnoses when applicable.

Diagnostic clarity and clinical context
When diagnoses are made, the report explains how conclusions were reached and how symptoms fit together, rather than listing labels in isolation. When diagnoses are not indicated, the report outlines alternative explanations and contributing factors to ensure clarity rather than ambiguity.

Individualized, practical recommendations
Recommendations are tailored specifically to you and your goals. These may include guidance for therapy, executive functioning or coping strategies, workplace or academic accommodations, referrals, or next steps for support. The focus is on recommendations that are realistic, actionable, and aligned with your daily life.

A feedback session
A dedicated feedback session is included to review results, answer questions, and discuss how findings apply to your lived experience. This is an opportunity to process reactions, clarify meaning, and collaborate on next steps.

Documentation you can use
When appropriate, reports may be shared with other providers, schools, or employers to support accommodations or continuity of care. Many individuals also find the report helpful as a personal reference for understanding themselves more compassionately.Adult assessments are conducted with care, pacing, and respect for the individual. what people often say after an evaluation

Many adults describe the assessment process as:

  • Clarifying and validating

  • Putting language to lifelong experiences

  • Reducing shame or self-blame

  • Helping things “finally make sense”

  • Offering a roadmap rather than just answers

For some, the evaluation provides a diagnosis. For others, it offers a clearer understanding of patterns and needs without a single label. Both outcomes can be meaningful.
