Comprehensive Child Psychological Evaluation

Ages 6+

A child psychological assessment is a comprehensive evaluation designed to better understand how a child thinks, learns, feels, and relates to the world around them. For children ages 6 and older, assessments can help clarify concerns related to attention, learning, behavior, emotional regulation, social functioning, and development.

A comprehensive evaluation goes beyond a single diagnosis. It looks at the whole child by assessing multiple areas of functioning, including:

  • Cognitive abilities and problem-solving

  • Attention, executive functioning, and self-regulation

  • Academic skills (such as reading, writing, and math)

  • Social and emotional functioning

  • Behavioral patterns and coping strategies

  • Developmental history and environmental factors

When appropriate, the evaluation includes assessment for ADHD, autism, learning disorders, anxiety, mood concerns, and other factors that may be impacting a child’s daily life.

About the process

How the Evaluation is Conducted

The evaluation process typically includes:

  • A detailed parent interview to understand developmental history and current concerns

  • Direct testing with the child using standardized, age-appropriate measures

  • Parent and teacher questionnaires (when relevant)

  • Behavioral observations and clinical interpretation

  • Integration of all findings into a cohesive understanding

Testing is conducted in a supportive, child-centered environment, with attention to pacing, breaks, and the child’s comfort.

What Parents Receive

Families receive a comprehensive written report that:

  • Clearly explains findings in accessible language

  • Identifies strengths as well as areas of challenge

  • Provides diagnostic clarification when applicable

  • Offers individualized, practical recommendations for home, school, and therapy

  • Can be shared with schools, pediatricians, or other providers as needed

A feedback session is included to review results, answer questions, and help parents understand next steps.

Why Families Choose a Comprehensive Assessment

Parents often describe comprehensive evaluations as helpful when:

  • Concerns feel layered or unclear

  • Previous supports have not fully helped

  • A child has been misunderstood or mislabeled

  • There is disagreement between home and school observations

  • Parents want guidance that is specific and actionable

The goal is not simply to label, but to provide clarity, understanding, and direction so children can receive the support they need to thrive.

Many families worry about what an evaluation might say about their child. We approach assessments with care, curiosity, and respect. Children are not reduced to scores or diagnoses. Instead, evaluations are used to tell a fuller story about how a child’s brain works, and how to support that child with compassion and intention.

Why Complete a Child Psychological Evaluation at Tosa Psych?

At Tosa Psychological Services, we approach psychological assessment with care, intention, and respect for the complexity of each child and family. Our evaluations are designed to provide meaningful insight — not just answers — so that families leave with clarity, direction, and a deeper understanding of their child.

Timely access, without long wait times

Unlike many hospital or large systems, we are able to offer assessments without extended waitlists. This allows children and families to receive answers and support when concerns are current, rather than waiting months or years for evaluation.

Time, depth, and attention

We intentionally schedule assessments to allow ample time for careful testing, observation, and integration. Our clinicians are not rushed by insurance-driven limitations, which allows for a more thorough, thoughtful evaluation process.

Personalized and child-centered

Each evaluation is tailored to the child’s unique profile, concerns, and goals. We take the time to understand the child within their developmental, family, and school context rather than relying on one-size-fits-all testing batteries.

Goal-oriented recommendations

Our evaluations are designed to be practical and meaningful, not just informative. Families receive clear, individualized recommendations that can be implemented at home, at school, and in therapy. These recommendations are tailored to the child’s specific strengths, challenges, and goals, helping caregivers and educators understand not only what supports are needed, but why they are helpful.

When appropriate, we are also available to collaborate with schools. This may include consulting with teachers, participating in IEP or 504 meetings, or joining school calls to help translate assessment findings into effective, developmentally appropriate supports. Our goal is to ensure that evaluation results are understood and used in ways that meaningfully support the child’s learning and well-being across environments.

Experienced, doctoral-level clinicians

Assessments at Tosa Psychological Services are conducted by doctoral-level psychologists with specialized training in child development, neurodivergence, trauma, and psychological assessment. This level of expertise allows for nuanced interpretation and careful differentiation between overlapping concerns.
